A hood that is only a few inches wrong can turn a straightforward collision repair into a fitment problem that holds up the whole truck. Before you measure truck hood length for a replacement order, determine exactly what the listing means by “length.” On commercial trucks, that number may refer to the hood shell, a hinge-to-front measurement, or a vehicle configuration such as bumper-to-back-of-cab. Those are related dimensions, but they are not interchangeable.
For a repair shop, fleet department, or owner-operator, the goal is not just getting a close measurement. The goal is identifying the correct hood configuration so the hinges, grille, headlamps, fenders, bumper, air intake, and cab all work together as intended.
Start With the Truck’s Full Identification
Do not identify a replacement hood by make alone. A Freightliner, International, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Mack, Volvo, or Western Star may use several hood designs within the same general model family. Production year matters, but it is only one part of the fitment decision.
Record the VIN, make, model, model year, and cab style before taking measurements. Then note the details visible at the front end: headlamp shape and location, grille style, grille surround, bumper style, fender extensions, air cleaner or intake position, and whether the truck has a set-forward or set-back front axle. A hood that looks similar in a yard photo can have different openings, mounting points, or front-end components.
If the original hood is still on the truck, photograph it from the front, both sides, and the rear hinge area. Include damage-free areas when possible. How to Measure Truck Hood Length on the Vehicle

Measure More Than One Dimension
Hood length narrows the search, but it does not confirm fitment on its own. Take a second measurement from the rear hinge area to the front mounting area or grille opening. Then measure the hood width at the rear near the cowl and at the front near the grille. On a damaged hood, these dimensions can also reveal whether the shell has shifted or spread.
Check the distance between left and right hinge mounting locations, along with the hinge style. Some hoods use different brackets, pivot positions, or reinforcement structures even when the exterior profile appears nearly identical. If the replacement hood includes hinges or hardware, confirm whether those components are correct for the truck. If it does not, inspect the original hardware for wear, cracks, or bent mounting points before planning to reuse it.
Do Not Confuse Hood Length With BBC
Many heavy-duty truck applications are identified by a bumper-to-back-of-cab measurement, commonly called BBC. This is a vehicle layout measurement that runs from the bumper to the rear of the cab. It is often used to distinguish short-nose and long-nose configurations.
BBC can be a valuable fitment clue, especially on conventional trucks, but it is not automatically the physical length of the hood. The bumper, grille, cab setback, hood angle, and front-end design all affect the relationship between the two measurements. A truck’s BBC designation may point you toward the correct hood family, while the actual hood measurement and component layout confirm the exact version.
When working from a listing that references BBC, verify whether the application is defined by BBC, hood length, axle configuration, or a combination of those details. This step prevents a common ordering mistake: selecting a hood with the right overall nose length but the wrong grille opening, headlamp arrangement, or hinge setup.
Verify the Front-End Configuration Before Ordering
Once you have a working hood length, compare the truck’s front-end details against the replacement application. Focus on the items that physically control whether the hood will install and operate correctly.
First, inspect the headlamps. Are they mounted in the hood, in the fender, behind a grille surround, or in a separate bezel? Headlamp openings are a major fitment separator between hood revisions. A hood may be close in length yet unusable if it is molded for a different lamp design.
Next, compare the grille and surround. Note whether the grille opening is tall, short, wide, narrow, rectangular, or tapered. Check for integrated grille surrounds, separate grille panels, and differences in mounting tabs. If the existing grille is undamaged and will be reused, its configuration needs to match the new hood.
Then inspect the air intake and underhood clearance. Air cleaner cutouts, intake openings, and duct locations can vary by engine package and model year. Account for Damage Before Trusting Your Tape Measure

If the front edge is crushed, measure from an undamaged structural reference where possible and use the truck’s identifying details to confirm the application.
